March Roundup from Merrie and Bright.

Where's the year going?! It's hard to believe we're heading into the second quarter of the year, but I'm certainly happy to see some sunnier days and lighter evenings. Here's what went on at Merrie and Bright Calligraphy this month...

Merrie and Bright Calligraphy Place Card

The Flourish Workshop is a beautifully curated event for wedding photographers to learn about branding and marketing and hone their skills. For their Spring workshop, which took place this month, I created a wedding invitation suit and day-of stationary especially to be featured as part of the styled shoot session. The shots from the event are all so beautiful!

In the middle of the month, I had a shoot with some of my favourite industry people at The Roof Gardens in Kensington. The shots from the day will no doubt be in a future post, but as you can see from my behind-the-scenes photos, it was a really fun day... with flamingos a plenty! Can't wait to share the shoot soon.

And finally, rounding off the month in a lovely way with a feature in You and Your Wedding magazine. Styled by The Little Wedding Helper, the Hygge-inspired shoot, which took place at The Battleaxes before Christmas last year, was one of my absolute favourites of 2017.

The styled shoot is a really special one; cosy yet indulgent, with beautiful seasonal foliage, a number of stunning cakes and features wooden laser cuts created by yours truly, including my popular wooden personalised wreath cake topper. Plus my calligraphed signage for the hot chocolate bar! I mean, every wedding should have a hot chocolate bar, right?!

After being featured on Bridal Musings at the end of last year, it's great to see this shoot in print in You and Your Wedding's 'Seasonal Style Guide' supplement that comes with the latest copy of the magazine. Especially one to look out for if you're planning you Winter 2017 wedding, with plenty of seasonal inspiration.

And on a more personal note, I had a lovely Mother's Day (although think I got a bit jipped on the "lie in" with the time change). When I was growing up in Texas, there was an amazing bakery that made piña colada cake. Every year on my birthday, I had this cake (we even had it for our wedding cake!). When I moved from the States, my mum came to visit a couple of years in a row on my birthday and managed to bring a full cake for me on the plane! Anyway, my one request this year for a present was a piña colada cake that I could have entirely to myself (I know, I know. Don't judge). My husband got in touch with Vanessa from The Sparkling Spatula and she did not fail to deliver. I was presented with a lovely cake decorated with macarons and pink, buttercream frosting peaks at 9am on Mother's Day. My best laid plan for not sharing went awry, but it was such a lovely treat! Now for my birthday coming up in a couple of weeks...

February Roundup from Merrie and Bright Calligraphy

It was another busy month for me here at Merrie and Bright Calligraphy! February's roundup really showcases many of the different types of projects I work on - from invitation suites to hand lettered signage and laser cuts to running calligraphy workshops - there's even some cocktails thrown into the mix!

This month I was honoured to be asked to create the invitations and day of stationery for the World Child Cancer 2017 Gala Dinner.

I chose a typography based design which was gold foiled. I had planned to do this on my own foiling machine, which I got in January, but unfortunately things did not go to plan. After days of fiddling and panicking, I rang up my buddy Suzanne at The Whistle Press who came to the rescue and invited me over to her studio for the day. It was so nice to have some company and after much mentoring from Suzanne, many biscuits, and 9 hours of printing, they were finished in all of their shiny, gold foiled glory!

During February, the wonderful wedding photographer Amanda Karen headed to the National Wedding Show where she put together the most stunning stand. I was delighted to create the copper 'Wedding Lounge' laser cuts for Amanda, which adorned the incredible flower wall by Emma Soulsby Flowers.

February also saw the finishing off of a wedding invitation suite for a local Bicester couple getting married in April. They opted for a peachy pink watercolour wash with gold hand calligraphy for the names and titles on the other cards.

Mid month, I ran a workshop with a twist and paired calligraphy with cocktails! Held at Mettricks in Southampton, attendees got to experience my modern calligraphy class for beginners whilst sipping delicious cocktails. I'm planning more Calligraphy and Cocktails Workshops later this year, so watch this space!

To end the month, I also had a lovely morning running a private tutoring session at one of my favourite haunts in Oxford, George Street Social. If you can't make one of my workshops or would prefer to learn calligraphy skills in a one-on-one class, do get in touch to discuss private calligraphy tutoring.

February finished up in fabulous style, with a feature in Bridal Musings. My hand lettered, hot chocolate bar board was originally seen on the site back in December as part of a beautiful cosy, winter shoot inspired by the Hygge trend. This time Bridal Musings included the sign as part of of a feature for a Beauty and the Beast inspired wedding - totally up this girl's alley! I love that, with the release of the Disney remake, fairy tale wedding inspiration is having a bit of a moment.

Join me at the end of March for another update, here's hoping Spring will have well and truly sprung by then!

January Roundup from Merrie And Bright Calligraphy

After a busy December fulfilling festive orders, followed by a restful family Christmas, I began 2017 raring to go and full of business plans for the new year! Building on a wonderful 2016, I know this year is going to be a really good one for Merrie and Bright Calligraphy - with new product and service launches, some exciting wedding calligraphy work in the pipeline, and modern calligraphy workshops taking place across the south of England.

January kicked things off in style, with wedding fairs, workshops, and a couple of amazing blog features; here's what went on for Merrie and Bright Calligraphy this month...

Early January saw my first styled shoot of the year featured on the B.LOVED blog - a gorgeous shoot styled by Carmela Weddings and Events and shot by Amanda Karen Photography at The Refinery venue in London. For the Industrial Chic shoot, I contributed a large Happily Ever After lasercut sign, which was painted in copper to compliment the chic theme of the shoot. I also created calligraphy for the wedding cake.

The cake for the shoot was a collaboration between myself and Little Bear Cakery, I lettered the word ‘Love’ and she somehow magicked the lettering onto the cake - there are just so many wonderful and fun ways to incorporate modern calligraphy into your wedding! See more from the Industrial Chic shoot at B.LOVED: 'Industrial Chic & Copper Wedding'.

Modern Calligraphy Workshop

My workshops this year kicked off with Beginners Modern Calligraphy Classes in Oxford and Chelmsford. The Jam Factory venue in Oxford is a beautiful space, with gorgeous natural light - look out for more classes there later this year. I also loved hosting Chelmsford based modern calligraphy classes with the team at Rock the Frock and am looking forward to running more in the area in the future. Running calligraphy workshops is one of my favourite things to do, and I’m excited to be running classes every month this year - for news on the latest dates, make sure to sign up to my mailing list!

Later in the month, my wedding calligraphy was again featured on the wonderful B.Loved blog, but this time with a real wedding! The photos from Ale & Andrew’s Cotswold barn wedding at Merriscourt Barn are beautiful, and it was lovely to be a part of their big day. I created my favourite invitation suite to date in this pastel green paper. They were wrapped in a sheer vellum, tied together with a simple twine, and finished off with a custom copper wax seal. I created them in both Polish and English to include Ale's heritage in the celebrations. See more from the day on B.LOVED: 'Idyllic Stone Barn Wedding' and get in touch to discuss bespoke orders for your big day.

On the last weekend of January, I attended a wedding fair and open day at Hill Place. The weather was terrible, but the gorgeous country house venue was so cosy! I had a super day meeting other amazing suppliers like Victoria Fergusson Accessories and chatting to engaged couples about plans for their big days. I'm so proud to be on board as the official preferred stationer at Hill Place. It's a stunning venue to say I do!

It’s been such a busy and exciting start to the year, I can't wait to see what the next eleven month have in store. There are already some really exciting events on the horizon with a new foiling machine on its way next month and The Spring Make Weekend just around the corner!

I’ll be back early next month with another update post… in the meantime find Merrie and Bright Calligraphy on Instagram, Facebook & Twitter.
